Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about the World of the Spirit workshop.

Is this AA?

They say that any 2 alcoholics meeting together may call themselves an AA group. We are not associated with any specific meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous but this is an AA event. We will be using the "Big Book" Alcoholics Anonymous and will be walking through the 12 steps from the book.

Do sober houses or treatment centers need to register attendees?

YES! Registration is free, but we need a headcount to make sure we have enough food for everyone in attendance. If you have several people you'd like to register from a treatment facility or sober house and don't want to register everyone individually, please just send us an email at theworldofthespirit@gmail.com with the number of people who will be attending.

Why are you charging a registration fee?

There are many A.A. conferences/conventions held around the world. One of the most common misconceptions of their gatherings is that they are A.A. meetings and since there are no dues or fees for A.A. membership, there should be no fees to attend. Conventions and conferences are special events, not regular A.A. meetings. They require months of planning, preparation and money to present. Since most events are held in conference centers, there is a charge for the use of some facilities. Other expenses include travel and lodging for the speakers, printing of flyers, schedules, programs, postage, supplies and entertainment. A large event requires a substantial amount of money. Each conference is self supporting. No group monies are used to pay for the event. The cost of the event is paid for through registration fees. Attendance is voluntary and as responsible A.A. members, we now "pay our own way." as taken from the 2005 International Convention Program

While this workshop is certainly far less involved than an international convention, we do still have expenses. Our New Jersey speakers will be reimbursed for their travel expenses as well as a hotel room the night before the workshop, there is a fee for renting the meeting space from the church for the day, and our largest expense which is the food being provided. If anyone has specific questions regarding the breakdown of expenses or where exactly your registration money is going, we would be happy to chat more specifically!

What if I'm not in treatment but can't afford a registration?

No worries! The goal here is to help as many people as possible. Come regardless of what you can afford, nobody will be turned away.

What can I do to help?

Please help us outreach this event! Share the flyer with your network, let your home group know, and send our info especially to any treatment facilities who might be interested in attending!
